Causes Behind Roofing Granule Loss

During the roof shingle manufacturing process, mineral granules are adhered to the shingle surface to protect the shingle from sunlight and weather conditions. These granules are essential in keeping the shingle protected from the elements and, in turn, protect your roof from leaks and weathering. Loss of these granules reduces a shingle life expectancy and it exposes it to the elements.

Granule loss is a natural weathering and aging occurrence that happens throughout the shingle's life. In fact, during the first two years of shingle exposure on the roof, the shingle's excess granules will detach themselves and often show up in gutters or downspouts. This shedding of excess granules is not a cause of concern until bare spots appear on the shingle's surface.

Excessive granule loss can be the result of many factors, including:

  • Traffic on roof.
  • Shingles applied on slight slopes or on a roof with poor drainage capabilities.
  • Roof in need of replacement.
  • Severe weather damage.
  • Manufacturing defect, or "blistering"
