How to Clean Exterior Windows Like a Professional

Springtime brings spring cleaning - and what better way to enjoy spring's sunshine from inside your Gainesville, Woodbridge, or Middleburg home than through clean windows? When cleaning your exterior windows, follow these steps to make cleaning quicker and more effective.

  • Invest in a high-quality, professional squeegee.
  • Before washing, remove any cobwebs with a broom or cloth. Remove any excess dirt or dust by gently rinsing with a garden hose, taking care to not allow water spots to dry on the windows.
  • Do not squeegee a window in direct sunlight. Direct light dries out the cleaning solution before the glass can be polished, which leads to streaking.
  • Use an angled motion when running the squeegee to pick up on excess moisture and cut down on streaks.
  • Wash windows from the top down to prevent drips.
  • Use a soft toothbrush or cotton to clean window corners.
  • Use glass cleaner for any panes too small for the squeegee, as well as small touch-up cleaning.
  • After washing the windows, you may use a clean, crumpled-up sheet of newspaper to wipe the glass until it's dry. Newspaper polishes windows and leaves a dirt-resistant film.
