Improper Gutter and Downspout Placement Can Lead to a Water in Your Home Ruined Belongings, and Expensive Repairs

Gutters and downspouts can be the number one culprit behind water getting into your basement. When they work properly, gutters and downspouts allow water to roll off your roof and then channel that water away from your home. However, improperly placed or clogged gutters and downspouts can direct water too close to your home, which can lead to a wet basement, ruined belongings, and expensive repairs.

To help safeguard your home against water damage caused by gutters and downspouts, follow these tips:

  • Regularly make sure that there are no cracks in your gutter systems that allow water to seep down the side of the house.
  • Regularly clean your gutters and clear them of any leaves, sticks, and other debris. When gutters are clogged, rainwater overflows and can pool at your home's foundation.
  • Make sure downspout runoff isn't pooling into soil near your home's foundation
  • Take care of any gutter and downspout repairs as soon as possible.
  • Add another downspout or increase the size of an existing downspout if your gutters overflow.
  • Make sure downspouts extend at least 10 feet from the house.
