Known as the eyes of the home, windows bring in light, extend a living space, give its inhabitants a view of the outdoors, and serve as a great aesthetic component of a home. Windows can define a room's shape and serve as a room's focal point. It's no surprise that such an important part of your home can come in many stylish types that are designed to produce various effects.
Awning windows resemble a deck awning, as these windows are horizontally hinged and crank open from the bottom. Designed to provide light and breeze, awning windows can be slightly opened to allow ventilation while still providing privacy.
An extremely desired window choice is the bay window, which project out from the wall, with a center window parallel to the wall flanked by two windows attached at an angle. Similarly, bow windows project out like bays but have more than three sections that join to form a gentle curve.
Casement windows are very common, and are hinged vertically to swing in and out like a door. Casements crank open, instead of being slid up and down, which makes them easier to maneuver, and provide great opportunity for fresh air and side breezes.
Double-hung windows are stacked on top of each other and are opened by sliding in front or behind of each other. Only one half of the window can be open at one time. Double-hung windows are held in high regard for the ease of access, ventilation, and ability to go anywhere in the home. Single-hung windows operate like double-hung windows, but feature a fixed top half.
Fixed windows are designed to stay in place and never open, while sliding windows slide open on top and bottom tracks from side to side, much like a sliding glass door leading to an outdoor space. Similar to awning windows, hopper windows swing open, but from the top, making them a great choice for basements.
Palladian windows consist of several windows hung in a special configuration, including a pair of double-hung windows on either side of a single double-hung window with a semicircular window above it. Palladian windows bring great visual interest and a sense of drama to any space.
